How the menopause age estimate works
The average age of natural menopause is roughly 51 in the US and UK, with most women reaching it between 45 and 55. Genetics is the single biggest factor, if your mother went through menopause early, you're more likely to as well.
What moves the number
- Mother's menopause age, the strongest predictor.
- Smoking, typically pulls menopause 1–2 years earlier.
- Low BMI / low body fat, slightly earlier.
- Never been pregnant, slightly earlier on average.
- Cycle changes today, once cycles start shifting, you're usually within 4–8 years of your final period.
The four stages
Premenopause: normal cycles, normal hormones.
Early perimenopause: cycle length starts varying by 7+ days.
Late perimenopause: 60+ day gaps between periods, stronger symptoms.
Postmenopause: 12 full months without a period.
When to talk to a clinician
See a clinician if your period stops before 45, if symptoms disrupt your sleep or work, or if you want to discuss hormone therapy. FSH bloodwork can help in some cases, but in perimenopause hormone levels swing day to day, symptoms are usually the better guide.
